This mean they were finally coming to a end. The love was no longer there and they feelings changed towards eachother.I believe at this point, if its true love you would not give up so easy. You would try everything in your power to stay together instead of moving on.

This mean he was very hurt and felt that if he show emotion in front of Janie she would take him for granted. I think that when this happen most cases, men do not show emotion to the woman, at least the sensitive side. So i think he did the right thing with living and letting his emotions show.
